"Mayors of Liberty has grown from a trio to a full eight members and the well-rounded results can be found in the pop/rock gems throughout their album, Dream On." -- Stereo Subversion
"There’s an underlying through line within Dream On of Indie rock, but far from lo-fi, it’s like a smooth bourbon without a burn, absolute hi-fi satisfaction" -- Secretly Important
"Dream On is a collection of songs meant to pull on the heartstrings and make us contemplate what we are looking for in this life. It provokes us to ask the question “Do I feel loved?” We all have a desire for connection with people and this album is the answer to all of those who feel they are struggling to reach that sort of happiness." -- In Your Speakers Media
Mayors of Liberty is a Seattle indie rock octet known for its full sound and lush harmonies. Initially formed as an acoustic trio in March 2012, the group grew to its current size after the completion of their debut full length Another Day In The Dream Factory. With their second full-length record, Dream On, the band uses elements of soul, gospel, jazz, and rock n’ roll in a distinct combination that creates a classic feel.
Front man and lyricist Kirt Debique is a voice for those who have experienced loss but maintain a sense of hope. He speaks to those “lonely hearts” who are longing to connect. The process of letting go of the past and embracing the future is hardly linear; it is full of forward strides and plunges back into introspection and doubt. Debique explores this tension in a beautiful and engaging way. The record is an invitation to dream and be vulnerable in spite of life’s uncertainties.
Each song possesses an impressive clarity. The compositions are lush and full without self-indulgence or pretense. The cello and vocal harmonies flutter around Debique as he moves seamlessly through verses to choruses and back again. The rhythm section is precise, the piano wanders gracefully, and Stephen Miller’s intricate guitar work ties everything together.
The often used phrase “dream on” can have a sarcastic and pessimistic intent in its colloquial use, but with this title and record Mayors of Liberty have opened a beautiful discussion about what it means to search for love and friendship. It is tender and open in its approach. The hooks are memorable and stay twisting in your brain long after the record has finished. Similarly, the words continue to mull about in your heart as you go about your day.
